What Every Parent Needs To Know About Facebook and What Their Kids Are Doing On There

By: Chris Jacob

While Facebook originally was a way for US college students to connect with each other all over campuses across the country it has now grown in to a social network that is second only to MySpace in popularity but may in the end have broader long term appeal. Facebook is a site that allows you to create a profile and page for yourself with your own photos, details and probably most importantly affiliations.

Facebook really demonstrates the idea of 6 degrees of separation in a very active way as each connection you make with someone is documented by how you know each other (i.e. family, friend, colleague, friend of a friend, school mate, travel partner, etc.) It is becoming both popular and useful for this reason as suddenly people are searching their own contacts networks and seeing if they can find someone to help them.

This may be someone who has a particular skill (i.e. job) or just someone who might be able to show you around in a foreign country when travelling. As you have “met” through your contacts maybe once, twice or even three times removed there can be that instant level of trust and repoir. Added to that Facebook includes many widget or gizmo type features, such an interactive photo sharing, where in the world applications you have visited, sending gifts/drinks to a friend and the list goes on and on and is ever increasing. Facebook membership in Australia in 2007 is sky rocketing and is now the 11th most popular website in the country.
